Cher Ami a Veteran of World War I --- Zazzle

Cher Ami (meaning "Dear Friend" in French) was a pigeon. He was a bird of war during World War I. In October 1918, he flew out an all-important message from the "Lost Battalion" despite being shot, and thus saved 200 soldiers. His life was very harrowing. Here is an excerpt from the HomeofHeroes.com website:
"The Black Check Cock carrier pigeon was one of 600 birds owned and flown by the U.S. Army Signal Corps in France to carry important messages from the front lines. Already the pigeon had flown 11 important missions in the American sector around Verdun."

Cher Ami was wounded by shrapnel. Everything the medics could do to help him survive and thrive was done for him. He was honored with a medal from France. General Pershing of the USA bid him farewell as he departed on a ship to retire in the USA. He did ultimately die as a result of his injuries the following year 1919.
